Overview: Island Building

Island Building was delivered as part of a white-label collaboration of Nautics Technologies and Progress Hacker, where we acted as the technical development partner for one of their UK-based clients.

The end client was a landscaping and outdoor design business operating across the UK. Their services included gardening, landscaping installations, and outdoor space design. Despite delivering high-quality physical work, their digital presence was extremely limited.

Before working with Nautics Technologies and Progress Hacker:

  • The business operated primarily via Facebook and WhatsApp
  • There was no website
  • No structured portfolio
  • No centralized place to showcase completed projects
  • No professional digital identity outside social platforms

They were busy on-site, installing and designing outdoor spaces not managing technology. What they needed was a simple, professional, and durable online presence that would not distract them from their core work.

Challenges

Although Island Building project looked simple on the surface, there were important constraints.

1. Zero Digital Infrastructure

This was a true from-scratch build:

  • No hosting
  • No backend
  • No content system
  • No structure

Everything had to be created cleanly and correctly from day one for Island Building.

2. Social-Only Operations

The client was used to:

  • WhatsApp messages
  • Facebook comments
  • Informal communication

The website of Island Building needed to complement, not replace, how they already worked.

3. Simplicity Without Fragility

A WordPress site could have worked but the client did not want:

  • Plugin dependency
  • Ongoing update issues
  • CMS maintenance overhead
  • Security risks from third-party components

They wanted something simple, stable, and controlled.

Solution

We deliberately avoided shortcuts and built exactly what the business needed nothing more, nothing less.

Step 1: Platform Decision: Custom PHP with Laravel

We selected Laravel with a PHP foundation instead of WordPress.

Why?

  • Greater security control
  • No plugin dependency
  • Cleaner long-term maintenance
  • Fully custom logic without CMS bloat
  • Stable performance for a small but growing business

This choice eliminated common small-business website risks before they could appear.

Step 2: Custom Five-Page Website Build

We developed a fully custom five-page website, not a template and not a CMS theme.

Key characteristics:

  • Clean, modern layout inspired by architectural and outdoor design aesthetics
  • Image-led sections to highlight real landscaping projects
  • Clear content hierarchy
  • Mobile-friendly structure

Island Building was intentionally lightweight and fast.

Step 3: Simple Content Management Logic

Rather than building a complex admin panel, we implemented:

  • Simple, secure content upload logic
  • Controlled image management
  • Structured page content

This allowed the client to:

  • Upload photographs themselves
  • Update visuals without risk
  • Keep content fresh with minimal effort

No unnecessary complexity.

Step 4: Social Media Integration

We integrated:

  • Instagram feeds to display recent outdoor projects
  • Facebook links for inquiries and visibility

This allowed visitors to:

  • See ongoing work
  • Trust the business through real activity
  • Contact the client using familiar platforms

The website became a central hub, not a replacement for social media.

Step 5: Deployment & Handover

The website was:

  • Deployed on a stable hosting environment
  • Tested for responsiveness and performance
  • Handed over with clear usage guidance

No long training.
No complicated documentation.
Just a system that works for Island Building.
